OUT OF BOUNDS
Asphalt, concrete, cement or tarmac…The texture is not relevant, only the court design matters.
Europe's talent to build multi-sports courts always disconcerted me, this brilliant mix of handball and volleyball lines, or soccer goal mixed with a basketball hoop. Such an urbanism and architectural non-sense keeps proliferating in the old continent whereas the rest of the world understood the necessity of colorful playing fields.
New York City initiated the trend, blending spectrums of blue, green, yellow, red within these approximate white boundaries painted on the ground.
Quite often, the court design - through its graphic stimulus, imperfection, or time alteration - can simply reveal the intensity of the contests played or by extent the neighborhood story.
